Touro Students, Alumni Meet with Employers at Lander College Career Fair

Students and alumni met with prospective employers.

Alumni and students from the Lander College of Arts and Sciences (LAS), the Lander College for Men (LCM), and the Lander College for Women (LCW) were able to meet with representatives of 33 companies—such as Aflac, AchieveBeyond, B and H Photo, Centers Health Care, Deloitte, Leshkowitz and Company, Loeb & Troper, Roth and Company, the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC), Maimonides Medical Center, New York Therapy Placement Services, the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services, the Orthodox Union, Perelson Weiner, LLP; People’s United Bank, and PricewaterhouseCoopers—to pitch themselves or to learn more about career opportunities. Students from Machon L’Parnasa, the New York School of Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS), and Touro graduate schools also attended the fair.

Students—like Avraham Young, an accounting major at Lander College for Men, and Shevy Schiffer, a math major at Lander College for Women—said they appreciated the opportunity to meet with so many employers.

"I got a lot of information about positions in mechanical engineering by speaking with the employers," said Schiffer, "and I also made a couple of connections, and contacts, that I could reach out to after the career fair.”

Some employers at the Career Fair were Touro alumni themselves, such as Lindsey Horvitz Strassman, LCW '13, a staff auditor at EisnerAmper, and Tzivya Minkowich, LAS '15, actuarial associate at AXA US-Actuarial. Strassman, who was hired after an interview at a Lander College Career Fair, said it was ironic that “the last time I was here, I was on the other side of the desk!” she said.

The event was designed and developed by the Office of Career Services under the leadership of Director Ron Ansel and Assistant Directors Sarri Singer and Chaim Shapiro, with major guidance and support from LAS Dean Robert Goldschmidt. The Touro College Office of Career Services conducted eight Career Fair Preparatory Workshops in all three Lander schools so that students would know what to expect, how to dress and how to respond to potential questions. Career Services staff also worked with students in helping them sharpen their resumes and interviewing skills. At the fair, students also had the opportunity to have professional photos taken for placement on LinkedIn.

“I am extremely pleased that we have such a great turnout of students and employers looking to hire our students— a combination that means students will have a greater probability of receiving follow-up interviews and offers for internships and full time positions," said Career Services Director Ron Ansel. According to him, employer feedback was “extremely positive.” 

Bita Goldman, the vice president of operations and general counsel for Quantum Networks, had high praise for Touro students. “I’ve attended many career fairs in the past—just this month I was at Fordham and Columbia and all the local colleges—and I have to say that, by far, the Touro students are the most prepared,” she said. “Their resumes are beautiful, they’ve researched their companies, and they know what they’re looking for.”

Marketing major E.C. Birnbaum—who’s graduating from LAS in January 2015—said he came to the fair to get a head start on his job search. The soon-to-be-grad interviewed with the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Initiative and the Kleinman Family Holocaust Education Center, among other employers. “I got to practice my interviewing skills, got to network, meet some people, get some business cards…and a few of them said they’d be in touch with me. So…yeah, it was a great experience overall!"
