For the upcoming holiday of Purim, accepted students, prospective students and alumnae of LCW came together to pack mishloach manot for non-profit organization Yad Eliezer. Held in Israel, the event’s theme of “Spreading Simcha” was evident not only in the packing of the 80 baskets, which included costumes and megillot, but also in the joyous atmosphere. The women enjoyed a night of food, music and fun as well as speeches and Dvrai Torah from both Dean Stoltz-Loike and Dr. Luchins.
A hurricane couldn’t stop us LCW students and alumae from giving back to the community.
We had a great time walking with Sharsheret at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Sunday! We had a Touro group composed of students, alumnae, and employees with their families. As a part of the 400 Sharsheret walkers, our pink hats and orange shirts really stood out amongst the thousands of walkers. It was so awe inspiring to see Central Park filled with people supporting an important cause. Many people had signs on their back saying they were “making strides for so-and-so.” Often they were walking for family members or friends, but I saw many who were survivors themselves wearing the signs stating how many years they have been in remission- as well as pink sashes that said “Survivor.” I’m sure this will be a walk that no one forgets.
Pink hats are making their way through the school!
Students, alumnae, and Touro employees are signing up to join Team Sharsheret this Sunday in Central Park for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer NYC Walk. In order to infuse some extra Sharsheret and LCW cheer, we are giving everyone who signs up a pink hat with the LCW name and breast cancer ribbon intertwined. Check back after the weekend for a more detailed post accompanied by more pictures from the walk!
What a great event! Our very own Alison Barnett, also known as Alibabka, blew us a way with her cooking show at the 65th street residence facility. The room was packed, with all attention on Alison. With much audience interaction, Alison taught us how to make a selection of fall Chagim appetizers and desserts. We learned how to form dumplings as we made dim sum dumplings with a dipping sauce. Who knew that you should weigh down pie crust with beans while it bakes in the oven empty of the french apple tart filling? We tasted the most delicious and creative salads: wheat berry granny smith salad with toasted walnut dressing, and salad of mescaline and avocado with basil-honey dressing. Mmmmm…. Don’t think that this event was purely an experience for the eyes and palette; it was also educational! Do you know what a buckeye is? I will give you a hint: Ohio. While you mull that over, I will let you know that we finished off with buckeyes for dessert. Think peanut butter meets chocolate and you’ve got it. It was a great event that each attendee left with a smile on her face and maybe a few pounds on her waist!
“hey, it’s been like 4ever! What’s up?”
“hey!!! nm, u?”
“ditto, brb”
“sure, np”
“back”
“hey! I’m so glad we got to catch up! gtg, ttyl
”
Does the above conversation seem all too familiar lately?
We recently had a shiur given by Rabbi Dovid Cohen on a meaningful topic during the three weeks. The topic was “Ahavas Chinam – Strengthening Our Relationships in The Age of Facebook & Twitter.” Held as more of a round table discussion than a lecture, the shiur became very interactive. It was a great opportunity to refocus on how to have a real relationship, while still living in the 21st century.
We are so proud of our very own Alison Barnett who has been all over the media this year!
When at LCW, Alison majored in psychology and minored in biology, preparing to get her masters in nutrition. Although extremely busy, Alison would often be found in her room cooking unique and delicious food to the delight of all of her roommates and friends. It is therefore no surprise to hear that Alison is now finishing a program at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) in New York City. She will soon be starting an internship at Solo. Hatzlacha rabba Alison!
The night started out with much excitement as the guests arrived. Around the room, one could hear names called and squeals of joy when alums unexpectedly bumped into long-lost friends. There were those who just graduated in January as well as those who graduated half a decade ago. Upon surveying the room, one could see the delight on everyone’s faces as they casually mingled by the auction tables. Tickets were flying, contact information was changing hands; the evening was underway. A venerable fleishig spread was set before the attendees. While they dined, Kate Kramer, MC of the evening, introduced Rachel Blaustein, Director of Alumnae Affairs, and Dr. David Luchins, Founding Dean of the College, to share a few words.
People have been messaging on facebook, emailing on the web, texting, and talking on the phone all about it. Everyone is buzzing, what is this new creation, the Lander College for Women Alumnae Association, and why do they keep inviting me to such amazing events?!
