Teaming up with Oneg Shabbat
LCW students provide Purim packages for those in need
In addition to celebrating Purim by reading the megillah, giving (and getting!) mishloach manot, and going to the chagigah and seudah, students at Lander College for Women—the Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School (LCW) teamed up with Oneg Shabbat to perform the mitzvah of matanot l’evyonim, giving monetary gifts to the poor.
As in years past, students collected money to purchase food items for mishloach manot and then assembled the packages with handwritten notes. Oneg Shabbat, an organization that provides food for Shabbat and other Jewish holidays to those in need, delivered the mishloach manot – 38 packages this year – to two locations for pickup by eligible participants. Money that was left over was sent to Israel and distributed to those in need before the holiday. Students dedicated the project to the memory of Dr. Bernard and Mrs. Sarah Lander, the founder of Touro College and his wife.
