Light Up the Night
Lander College for Women celebrates annual Chanukah Chagigah on campus
In keeping with the Chanukah spirit, Lander College for Women—The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School (LCW) brought the “Festival of Lights” to life on the third night of the holiday. Rows of colorful, flickering paper lanterns lit up the auditorium and glittered the dinner tables at this year's chagigah, which featured special student performances and a creative lantern-decorating project.
The festivities began with a beautiful acapella rendition of “Al HaNisim” by the LCW Acapella Group and a series of hilarious skits from the 1965 comedy album “You Don’t Have to Be Jewish,” performed by the Drama Society.
“It was so exciting to be a part of the program and gather together with other students,” commented acapella singer Shifra Visnaw, ‘18.
After the captivating entertainment, students enjoyed dinner and dessert, which included all of the traditional Chanukah delicacies—latkes, sufganiyot, and chocolate gelt. Este Stollman, ‘17, co-chair of the Torah Learning Club (TLC), shared an illuminating Dvar Torah about Parshat Veyeshev and the importance of reflecting one’s true essence, like pure oil.
“I love the Chanukah atmosphere and celebrations at LCW,” said Leah Fruchter, ‘17, originally from Belgium. “Student government outdid themselves this year...especially with the decor!”
The hand-decorated assortment of lantern centerpieces, each more charming than the next, included bright dreidel and floral appliques, and served as inspiration for the DIY lantern-decorating activity at the end of the evening.
“Friends, fun, food, and arts and crafts,” smiled student government treasurer Jodi Brasch, ’16. “What could be better?”
