Avi Spiro offered potential employers a two-for-one deal: a talented graphic designer with a familiarity with coding. “My coding background will be useful in giving clients what they want,” said Spiro, who waited in line for an interview with a recruiter from Canon.
Spiro said his strongest suit is in photo-editing, a must-have skill for graphic designers. While he initially started off with a major in computer programming, he said he found his true calling in graphic design, a field in which his mother works. A surprising skill he thinks is necessary for success in his field? “People skills are incredibly important in graphic design,” said the sharply dressed Spiro. “You might think it’s all about talent, but really it’s equally vital to be able to listen to your client and give them what they want, not what you think they want.”
He had several strong interviews during the career fair. The secret to his success? “Treat every interview like you’re meeting a regular person. Don’t think about it as an interview.”
